Further inputs on "Vadirajapuram"


In the 3 Part series (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) on Vadirajapuram, I have presented the epigraphical evidences from Vijayanagara period. In the 4 stone inscriptions belonging to the reigns of Achyutadevaraya, Sadashivaraya and Venkatapathy Raya have clearly called the present day Tiruchanoor (Alimelu Mangapuram) as “Vadirajapuram.”

The 4th inscription presented in Part 3 belongs to one Venkatapathy Raya but at the time of writing that article, I could not get the printed version of the inscription. I could only get an online text file from Archive.org which is not legible to read the full inscription.


Fortunately, this week I could get the Epigraphic Report published by TTD that carry the said inscription of Venkatapathy Raya of Vijayanagara Empire. I am thankful to Mr. S. Venkata Sarma, Tirupati for lending the book from his personal library.

In Part 3, I have made a guess that the emperor ‘Venkatapathy Raya’ might be Venkata II who ruled the Empire between 1586AD – 1614AD. As the online text version of the inscription is garbled and illegible at many places, I guessed so. But when read the fine print of the inscription, I got amused to understand that the said inscription belongs to Kumara Venkatapathy Raya alia Venkata III who was on throne of Vijayanagara between 1630AD – 1642AD.

Venkata III or Peda Venkata Inscription

As per the Note 6 of the Page 130 of The Inscriptions of Venkatapathyraya’s Period published by TTD, we can know that this inscription is dated 29/09/1631 AD and the king ruling at that time was Sri Vira Kumara Venkatapatirayadeva Maharaya.

Thus my earlier assumption made to place this inscription between 1586 – 1614 AD gets void.

Now, as we can place this inscription in 1631AD, it becomes worthy to note that the age of the usage of “Vadirajapuram” to denote the village of Tiruchanoor gets extended from 77 years to 94 years.

The above text adds two new descriptions to “Vadirajapuram” that were not to be seen in the other 3 inscriptions. These new words are “temple village” and “Kudavar-nadu.”

Articulation of the word “Temple Village”:

After writing the Vadirajarapuram series, I just contemplated within that – “would there be a chance that a particular locality of Tiruchanoor has been called as Vadirajapuram?

This doubt has been dispelled by the word “temple village.” From this word we can deduce that the village in question is having a great temple located in its limits and the name of that village is “Vadirajapuram.”

What is Kudavar-nadu?

The above inscription of Venkatapathiraya (Venkata III or Peda Venkata) indicates that Vadirajapuram temple village is part of Kudavar-nadu. I have tried to know what exactly is this ‘nadu?”

In my online search, I have found another inscription belonging to a Pallava king called Vijaya-dantivikrama Varman. Hereunder is the screen grab of the said inscription:

The above inscription has been found in Sri Padmavathi temple of Tiruchanoor. During Pallava’s time this place was called as “Tiruchchoginur” and was part of Kudavur-nadu, a subdivision of Tiruvengada-kottam.

So, Kudavur nadu is a revenue subdivision formed during Pallavas’ regime and it appears that the later kingdoms/empire have followed the similar revenue setup. Thus Vadirajapuram too was belonging to the revenue subdivision of Kuduvar-nadu. This is yet another pointer that confirms that the whole temple village of Tiruchanoor has been called as “Vadirajapuram.”

It is still a mystery as to who named this temple village as Vadirajapuram and what has caused such naming of a famous holy place after a Madhva sanyasin?

I feel that a thorough exploration of the records and manuscripts available with Sonda Matha may throw some light on this special event of medieval history of South India.

Through this online post, I sincerely request the scholars of Sonda Matha and researchers from Madhva community to conduct the much needed research on war foot.
